Protect Yourself from Skimmers
The Newton Daily News recently shared an article stating that there is suspected skimmer activity at a local gas station. Skimming devices are illegal devices that scammers attach to gas pumps to steal your credit or debit card information.
How to Protect Yourself:
Do not insert your debit card into a gas pump: Skimmers read the magnetic strip on the back of your card. Don't give them the opportunity to take your information.
Use Tap-to-Pay: Tap-to-Pay is the most secure way to pay with a debit or credit card because it creates a one-time card ID that only works for one transaction.
Pay inside: If you can't use Tap-to-Pay, go inside the station to pay for your gas. This allows you to pay with cash or use the point-of-sale terminal inside, which is less likely to be tampered with.
Check the pump before you use it: Look for any signs of tampering, such as loose or damaged parts, foreign objects, or anything that appears out of place.
Use the pump closest to the station: These pumps are typically monitored more closely by station employees.
Monitor your account activity: Regularly review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized charges. Report any suspicious activity to your bank or credit union immediately.
What to do if you suspect a skimmer:
Notify the gas station attendant immediately.
Contact your local law enforcement agency.
Contact your financial institution.
